Let’s start with Microchip Technology, a U.S.-based chipmaker that was hit by a ransomware attack affecting some of its production facilities. The company disclosed the breach through an SEC filing, acknowledging that the attack had disrupted its manufacturing operations. This is yet another example of cybercriminals targeting production environments, knowing that halting operations often leads to higher ransom payouts.
Next up, Canon Design, a prominent architectural and engineering firm, was hit by the AVOS Locker ransomware group. This attack compromised the data of over 13,000 employees. What’s alarming is the type of information these attackers could have accessed, including sensitive design plans for major infrastructure projects.
In Flint, Michigan, the city was hit by a ransomware attack that disrupted payment systems and other municipal services. The city can only process payments by cash or check while they recover from the breach. Cyberattacks in smaller cities are becoming more frequent, and this is yet another example of how critical services can be impacted.
Finally, let’s touch on the Patelco Credit Union breach I covered earlier. They’ve now confirmed that customer and employee personal data was compromised in a ransomware attack. As I predicted, the breach is far more damaging than just service outages—personal information is now likely floating around on the dark web, leading to more identity theft and phishing risks.
